“What does Brut Impérial mean?” we are often asked. Well, the name has historical significance. Impérial is the French word for imperial. While the Pommery champagne can be called royal because it was delivered to the French royal family, the Moët & Chandon champagne got its nickname in Napoleonic times. Emperor Napoleon I liked to use his return journey after his victories in the East to stop off at Jean-Remy Moët and shower his victories with champagne. The tradition of sabering , the opening of the champagne bottle with a saber, which the victorious officers liked to perform, also dates back to this time . Napoleon was a big fan of Brut Champagne, which is why it can still be called imperial today.
