For People Who Love Spirits

A whiskey is a particularly stylish spirit that can offer a particular level of complexity. Today there are many different types of whiskeys, each with their own individual character. As a rule, every whiskey producer uses carefully selected types of grain to produce this noble spirit. Maturation in wooden barrels for 3 years creates the typical color and spicy taste that makes the enjoyment experience so unique.

How is whiskey made? Whiskey came into circulation in the fifth century through monks who introduced Christianity to the Celts and thus introduced the alcoholic "uisge beata". It is the forerunner of whiskey from Scotland and whiskey from Ireland, both of which have since been internationally successful. When it comes to whiskey production, most distillates are based on (malted and/unmalted) barley or a mix of different types of grain. The grain is first malted and then crushed. The grain is dried and smoked over peat, giving it its smoky and peaty taste. The mash is then created with the addition of water. This is followed by fermentation by adding yeast. After fermentation, the distillation process is carried out either continuously in the column still or discontinuously in the copper still. Once distillation is complete, the whiskeys are filled into oak barrels to mature for several years. Small capacity hogsheads or American bourbon barrels are preferred. The barrels usually have a capacity of around 400 liters. After storage, the whiskeys are usually reduced to drinking strength and bottled. Only then do the products go to the whiskey shop – whiskey store. Differences between whiskey types Scotch whiskeys made from barley are available as single malt , blended whisky, grain whiskey and single malt whisky. There are different whiskey regions in Scotland: Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Island Whiskeys and Islay. In each of these regions the whiskey tastes different, which is due to the production and storage. Irish whiskey is almost always a blend and the result of triple distillation. Whiskeys from Ireland are usually milder and clearer as well as less complex. Below you will find a rough idea of the whiskey regions in Scotland. Highland Single Malt Whiskey in the online shop The Highland Single Malt Whiskeys come from the northern region of Scotland. There are around 26 active distilleries in the Highlands, with mostly strong flavors. Highland whiskeys are spicy, delicate and fragrant. But not peaty or smoky. The best-known distillery in the Highlands is Glenmorangie , which stores its single malt whiskey in different casks. Highland single malt whiskeys are usually slightly sweet and easy to drink due to the second maturation in sherry casks. The best known brands in the Highlands are Highland Park, Dalwhinnie , Balvenie , and Glenlivet . Buy whisky online

Speyside Single Malt Whiskey in the online shop

The Speyside region is located in Scotland at the top right and is surrounded by the Highlands. Single malt whiskeys from the Speyside region taste similar to Highland single malt whiskeys. There are 55 active distilleries in the Speyside region , making up almost 50 percent of all Scottish distilleries. Most Speyside whiskeys have a sweet taste, are elegant and smooth. The most famous distilleries are The Glenlivet, Glenrothes , Glenfarclas , Glenfiddich and Macallan .

Lowland Single Malt Whiskey in the online shop

The Lowlands are in the southern part of Scotland. A typical Lowland single malt whiskey tastes light and contains no peat. The Lowland Whiskey tastes drier and clearer. The mild character and the triple distillation manufacturing process create a wonderful quality. However, in recent years, Islay and Highland whiskeys in particular have been able to take market share from Lowland single malt whiskey . It’s just not as distinctive as single malt whiskey from the other two regions. The best known distilleries are Auchentoshan , Glenkinchie and Rosebank.

Islay Single Malt Whiskey in the online shop

The Islay whiskeys from the island of Islay are very popular, strong, powerful, smoky, peaty and salty. The peat in the whiskey is a typical aroma for an Islay malt. Nine distilleries are in production and the legendary Port Ellen distillery was also on Islay. The Islay Single Malt Whiskeys are particularly enjoyable in winter, as the smoke and peat are not an ideal partner for summer days. All the distilleries on Islay are world-famous. These would be Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and Laphroaig . Whiskeys from these distilleries are often collector’s whiskeys with high potential for appreciation.
